Westchester Coastal Salt Eats Iron Railings Before It Eats the Bed Edge
The railing fails first. The boxwood is the second receipt.
We walk Rye, Greenwich, and Larchmont waterfronts after a windy week and find orange scale on iron railings while the bed edge below looks only a little tired. Owners want new shrubs. The salt is already in the metal. Flakes drop into the soil. The next spring the first row of plants burns. Treat the railing and the bed as one coastal file, not as a plant order.
Iron at the harbor is a landscape edge, not only a fence job
A decorative iron panel along a Greenwich terrace takes spray the lawn never sees. We photograph the lower rails, the footings in the bed, and the first plant off the metal. Rust at the soil line is a fencing and planting problem together. Painting over wet scale without moving the drip line is a winter redo.

Bed edges catch the flake and the spray
Salt on the air burns leaf margins. Salt from rust flakes changes the soil at the rail. We pull that first row if it is already a write-off and we put a gravel or stone strip so the next plants sit back from the metal. Mulch piled against a rusty post holds moisture on the iron. Drop the bark.
Irrigation that mists the railing every night is a rust machine. Move the head. Full-service maintenance should rinse the rail after a storm week if this is a contracted waterfront. That rinse is cheaper than a new panel.
Choose plants that tolerate spray for the first 3 feet. A tender hydrangea against a Rye harbor rail is a yearly funeral. We will say so before we install it.
Do not rebuild the whole bed for a 12 inch kill zone
A full landscape design redo is a choice. A salt strip at the rail is a setback and a metal conversation. Mixing them is how a waterfront quote balloons.
Lighting mounted on the same iron is a corrosion file. See landscape lighting if fixtures share the rail. Do not add more hardware to failing metal.
